Coordinate Sink, Faucet, and Cooktop Cutouts Before Countertop Templating

Templating day goes smoother when the sink, faucet, and cooktop decisions are already settled. Fabricators cut stone to the openings you confirmed — not to a model you are still comparing online. A short coordination checklist before Blue Sky Granite & Marble templates your kitchen can prevent remakes and awkward seams later.

This is a planning checklist for homeowners preparing for custom countertop fabrication in the Kennesaw showroom market and surrounding Metro Atlanta / Southeast Tennessee service area. It is not a fabrication manual and does not promise timelines or pricing.

Blue Sky fabricates and installs granite, quartz, marble, and quartzite. For material context while you plan cutouts, see their guidance on granite countertops and quartz countertops.

Confirm the sink before the template

Undermount, farmhouse, and drop-in sinks need different opening shapes and support details. Have the actual sink on site or at least the manufacturer cutout specification tied to the exact model number. If the sink is on order, confirm the ship date falls before templating — or ask whether a manufacturer template is acceptable for your project.

  • Exact sink model and finish
  • Undermount versus drop-in versus apron-front
  • Whether the faucet deck is part of the sink or drilled in the stone
  • Who supplies the sink clips or mounting hardware

Settle faucet holes and accessories

Single-hole, widespread, and bridge faucets need different hole patterns. Soap dispensers, filtered-water taps, and air gaps add more openings. Mark every hole you want in the stone before templating. Changing a faucet after the slab is cut often means a visible extra hole or a replacement piece.

  • ☐ Faucet model chosen and hole count confirmed
  • ☐ Soap dispenser or secondary tap yes/no
  • ☐ Reverse-osmosis or filtration faucet planned or ruled out
  • ☐ Sprayer or pot-filler locations noted on the layout sketch

Cooktops, ranges, and overhang clearance

A slide-in range and a cooktop cutout are different problems. Bring the appliance specification sheet, including cutout width, depth, and clearance to combustible surfaces. Note whether the countertop returns behind the range or stops at the appliance opening. Island cooktops also need confirmed overhang and seating clearances so the template matches how you will use the island.

Bring one packet to templating day

Put the sink spec, faucet hole diagram, cooktop cutout sheet, and a simple sketch of the run in one folder — paper or phone album. Walk the template technician through each opening. Ask them to repeat back the hole count and which side of the sink the faucet sits on. If anything is still undecided, say so plainly rather than guessing.

Cabinets, overhangs, and support come before the pretty slab photo

Stone needs adequate, fabricator-approved support. Confirm that cabinets are installed, leveled, and in their final positions before templating whenever your remodel sequence allows. If cabinets will move again, say so — a template taken against temporary boxes can produce counters that no longer fit.

Discuss overhangs for seating or appliance clearances while the cutouts are still open questions. An island with a cooktop and seating on the opposite side needs both decisions on the same sketch. Bring stool height and desired overhang depth as preferences, then ask the fabricator what their installation standards require for support brackets or corbels.

If you are replacing existing counters, note whether the old sink or cooktop will be reused. Reused fixtures need a cutout that matches the exact model and specification — not necessarily the old opening — and adequate fabricator-approved support. When in doubt, decide on replacement fixtures before the template appointment.
